2005  |  Capcom Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller (PlayStation 2) — NubyTech
Product concept development — Design process
The PlayStation 2 version of the Resident Evil Chainsaw Controller was planned as a step up from the GameCube version, featuring a highly detailed chainsaw design while maintaining the sense of a functional collectible. Later, the shape of the blade was revised to appear more realistic and, unlike the GameCube version, less toy-like. Inspired by the Onimusha 3 PlayStation 2 Katana Controller, the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller was conceived primarily as a collectible display piece to show off on a shelf rather than as a practical controller, although it is fully functional. The PS2 version retained the blood splatter effects while adding a serial-number plaque and a start-button pull cord that produces a real chainsaw sound effect.

2005  |  Capcom Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller (PlayStation 2) — NubyTech
Product concept development — Design process
The first non-functional PS2 Chainsaw Controller prototype used a yellow enclosure, matching the GameCube version. It also featured the same blade design, which I later updated for the final version to give it a more realistic appearance. After the creative team decided the PlayStation 2 controller would be orange instead, I photographed the prototype and created a Photoshop color mockup to visualize the new direction. I also designed the signature stand around the controller, which later became integrated into the final display-case packaging for the collectible. The original yellow prototype used for the mockup was auctioned in 2026.
